Awesome Weekend of Racing

Kathryn Dickinson - Eton Dorney
Kathryn Dickinson – Eton Sprint

Where to start…

ETON Sprint, an ITU qualifier for Chicago baby, where a few of our Jackpotters took to the scene on Saturday 23 May.  We had two top 10s in the overall position in the mens race: Kieran Hill blasted around the course in 1:02:30 and Mika cruised in seconds behind in 1:02:39. They came first and second respectively in their age group – Kieran gained 40 seconds on the swim over Mika, cancelled one another out on the bike.  Mika suffered cramp in T2 and could not get his left shoe on and lost 11 seconds but pulled back 22 seconds on the first run lap but Kieran dug in to just beat Mika.

Chris Brown was 6th in age group and put in the fastest bike split of his age group, meaning Chris will be traveling with Mika to Chicago to represent GB in the Worlds in September.

Chris Brown - nice wheels!

Kathryn Dickinson was a little robbed with a lost timing chip and popped an almighty 4th in Age Group position.

At the Bedford Priory Middle Distance race on Sunday, Andrew Whiteley, new to the distance, had a storming race collecting silver overall for his performance.  We understand that the swim was a navigator’s nightmare which Andrew led in and though he says he found the distance tough, his position would dictate otherwise! Great racing Andrew!

Then to the Lough Cutra Triathlon where Max Hazell scored a 2nd in the elite wave on the Olympic distance! So close to a win, Max is more than happy with his start to the season.  Max smashed out an amazing swim and his run!  Boy his run!  33 minutes for a 10k!

Max - a proud silver :-)

Tim Ashelford came 3rd overall in the Hertfordshire Triathlon over the standard distance and back in Yorkshire, the renowned freezing waters of the River Wharfe welcomed two Jackpotters to the Wetherby Triathlon (standard distance).  Alistair Cooke had a cracking race coming in with a 4th overall and Richard Knell-Moore 17th.  Seeing Richard’s bike split on Strava, it was a mighty fast one 🙂

The race to the Jackpot podiums continues….

Viva Yokohama!

Funny how Adam Bowden’s favourite race is Yokohama…and this weekend he popped an absolute blinder at the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Yokohama.  Just one minute behind the winner Gomez, Adam had one of the fastest bike times of the entire race (and faster than Gomez!), placed 7th overall and was the 3rd Brit in for Great Britain. An absolutely stunning performance Adam!

Tom Bishop came out of the swim in the top 20 however had to leave the race after ‘not feeling right’…’I was sick in Yokohama. The day before I woke up feeling queasy and it went down hill from there. I thought I’d start to see how it went but I had no energy, took a battering in the swim and went on to get dropped on the bike. Coaches told me to pull out. Disappointing, but these things happen’.  Get well soon Tom 🙂 still a tremendous swim.

On to the ladies elite race and Heather Sellars took to the stage coming in at 43rd but only minutes from the winner Gwen Jorgensen and 2nd Briton home.  Heather suffered a kick to the ribs however which ‘ended’ her race and is now looking forward to a better race at Baku.

But we must head back to Blighty where more action was taking place in the Etape du Dales sportive and there was a little bottom envy happening:

Over at Epworth – we have a WIN!  Andrew Whiteley came out to play and destroyed the field at the Sprint distance triathlon over the 400m – 21k – 5k course, smashing out 4.50 swim, 29.39 bike and then an 18.07 run. Kieran Hill also claimed a podium at the Little Beaver Olympic qualifier placing 3rd in his age group (20-24).  We hear it was windy climes in Leicestershire, so great going!

Then another WIN! For Kieran Savage at the Tadcaster league road race on Thursday evening last week.  Kieran belted around the shortened course (was 10, decreased to 7.1 miles due to road works) in a supersonic 15.30!

The race to the podiums continues….

Majorca 70.3 and more…

Jackpot Racing in Majorca 70.3Sun, sea and sand….and sweaty Jackpotters took to the seas and streets of Mallorca on Saturday for the 5th IM 70.3.  One lady and seven gents from Jackpot Racing all gained cracking tans from the days efforts which resulted in one Jackpotter qualifying for the Worlds in Austria in August.

Ladies were first off with men following in age groups. Jen had a cracking swim for her though swallowed half the ocean which came to revisit on the way into transition.  Francis at the end of the race looked like he was covered in all the salt from the ocean and came a whopping 7th in his age category.  Colin Hill had planned a none-finish due to a plaguing calf injury but golly what a swim and bike! Chris B has vowed never to do another 70.3 – we are to remind him of this.  Matt Wilson did himself proud and is currently shopping for Matcha tea.  Dave Morley (chicked! CHICKED! ) had a super race and Eddie Howarth, star of the show, finished in a whopping 4.37 qualifying for the Worlds. Jen popped a 4th in age group missing 3rd by 60 seconds.  Matt Pears also had a superstar race coming 7th in his age category and is currently sunning himself somewhere on the island.

A few Jackpotters are still on the island. Dave Morley beat Brad up a climb today.  Made up for the race, didn’t it Dave 😉

Morley – 1st up the climb against Sir Brad (in his dreams)…

Back in Blighty and we have some podiums #kachinggg! Tim Ashelford was feeling mightily happy with his age group win at the Sprint Champs in St Neots on Sunday.  Great going Tim!  And Mika!!  Won the Harrogate Sprint Triathlon also on Sunday for the second year in a row.  The Jackpotters are starting to clamber for the podium prizes….

A rather nice weekend of racing…

In the warmer and sunnier climes of Antalya in Turkey, three of our elites took to the clear waters and roads for the ETU Triathlon European Cup ending in some very nice results indeed.  In the men’s race, the top three places were taken by the Brits with Adam Bowden from Jackpot poaching a very strong second, seconds after Mark Buckingham.  David and Tom Bishop also made their presence be known with David claiming a top ten finish in 8th and Tom in 12th.  Tom had one of the fastest swims of the race as well as one of the fastest bikes.

The ladies were also triumphant with Hannah Drewett popping a top ten in 8th position and 2nd Brit home and Heather Sellars claiming a very strong 14th overall and 3rd Brit home.  We are also led to believe that the suntans picked up are also pretty good 🙂 (here’s hoping for Mallorca 70.3 next weekend)…

Over in Trowbridge and we have a PODIUM from Kieran Hill!  Kieran raced to bronze glory at the Trowbridge Big T Sprint Triathlon posting the fastest swim time of the day.  This was after participating in the BUCS Sprint Triathlon Championships where Kieran was placed 34th.  In the same race we have another top ten with Will Cowen taking 8th position and Kathryn Dickinson 37th in an extremely strong field of ladies.

Next stop…Mallorca 70.3 next weekend…Jackpot’s more senior athletes will be out to play…

Cat Jameson – Challenge Fuerteventura #girlpower

So last weekend saw the start of my racing season for 2015 and also my first ever half distance race out here at Challenge Fuerteventura. It was a last minute decision to do this race for a number of reason and I’m so pleased that I stepped up and took it on.

After the end of season last year, it took me a while to get back into training but in the lead up to Christmas my fitness was slowly coming back, I was finally enjoying running and looking forward to what 2015 would bring. Unfortunately, in early January I managed to pick up an injury stemming from my lower back which meant that whilst being away training in Aguilas, Spain, I couldn’t run and struggled to find anyone to put me back together. On a plus my swimming and biking was going amazingly and I clocked up a lot of miles in the saddle!

Thankfully when I got home! Mark Booth from Body Limits, Newport Pagnell, managed to realign me and got me back running. He really is a miracle worker and I would not have been racing now if it wasn’t for him!

In many ways, deciding to do the race and sorting everything out the week before had its benefits. I had no time to over think things which made it all stress free….well mainly!

Challenge Fuerteventura has always attracted a strong field and this year was no exception with the likes of Daniela Ryf, Anja Beranek, Eimear Mullan, Corinne Abraham and many more on the start line. I knew the only way to compete with these girls was to go out hard right from the start. There was no time to get into the race, I knew it had to be full gas from the beginning. The men had a two minute start on the women which had positives and negatives as it meant that I knew I would be leading the girls around if all went to plan.

As soon as the starting horn sounded, I sprinted out to the first buoy and quickly knew that I had clear water ahead. I could see the men in the distance so I just kept thinking that I needed to swim to them. The course was two laps where we had an “Australian exit” which meant that we had to run out onto the beach in between laps. At this point I could have a quick look at where the other girls were and I saw I had a lead on Daniela and was closing in on many of the men. By half way round the second lap I was passing quite a few of the men so I put my head down and pushed on.

Goal number one was achieved. I lead out of the swim and put good time into the other girls. Running into transition I saw that the elastic bands holding my shoes on had snapped as well as the elastic band securing my front bottle to stop it falling out on the rough road sections! I wasn’t too smooth getting on my bike with my shoes dragging along the ground and I am sure it did not look pretty but never mind I made it onto my bike and it was time to set off on the 90km hilly circuit.

After my slow transition Daniela rode up to me on the road out of Playitas and at this point I knew no matter what I had to try to stay with her. There was no way I was going to let her get away from me! Not long into the bike course the inevitable happened and my front bottle hit the floor. I tried to hold onto it but it was on a technical section so I had no choice but to leave it and ride on. Daniela and I rode past each other a few times in the first 10km or so but after a while she did not come through so I had a sneaky look back and I could not see her. I was shocked as I thought she would be right behind me. I knew I was feeling strong but the thought “have you gone out too hard” did cross my mind!

At around 30km, Anja came storming past which took me by surprise. She rode away initially but I stuck to my plan and slowly reeled her back in. We went through half way together, 90 seconds ahead of the rest of the field but unfortunately minutes later as we started to descend my chain came off whilst switching to the big ring and jammed against the frame. There was no hope of saving this one so I had to stop and sort it quickly! Anja, by this point was flying down the hill and I knew it would be hard to catch her again. I could see her pretty much all the way but I got no nearer to her. By half way I was also running short on fluids, my bottle with High5 energy and gels had almost gone so I was just onto water which I managed to pick up on the course. Lesson learnt. Don’t drop vital nutrition!

In the last 20km Daniela suddenly went storming past like a train but this time I could not go with her. She made it look easy and I can see why she is such a class athlete. I saw she caught Anja but then did not put too much of a gap into us. In the end I came off the bike 3rd and had a massive lead on 4th, 5th and so on.

I was looking forward to the half marathon in a strange way as I knew it would be an achievement in itself. I always knew I could run the distance but not having run that far since the middle of last year and only having been back running for 5 weeks I knew it was not going to be easy. The run course here is a toughie as it’s ridiculously hilly so I just found my rhythm and tried to stick to it. I ran in 3rd for 80% of the course but then the girls got me! At the end of the day I finished 7th but I know there is so much more to come.

I learnt so much during the race from needing to wear bigger racing flats (with socks on they have wrecked my toes) to needing to carry salt sticks as I suffered with a lot of cramp on the run which slowed me down. All in all it was a great first half distance event and I hit most of my objectives. Congratulations to all the other competitors, it was a tough but fun day I’ll be back!

I would like to say a massive thank you to my coach Mark Pearce, Intelligent Triathlon Training, who has taught me tons and pushes me daily. Thank you also to Mark Booth for putting me back together and to my sponsors who without you this wouldn’t be possible, Jackpot Racing, BlueSeventy, Spin Industries, High5, Impact Cycle Trading, ISM, Pedal Cover Insurance and Lane1 Sports Management. THANK YOU!
